How To: Change Fonts On The 5800, 5233 etc

The font that comes with Nokia is nice. But after six months you are bound to crave for a new look to your phone. Now changing fonts on a phone is usually not an easy task, I mean that was how you must have thought. But you know what you can use custom fonts, yes any font of your choice on your Nokia phone without any software. All you need to do is copy and paste a bunch of files. No replacing of system resources necessary!

First to increase your greed, I will post some screenshots,

Now let me tell you how I did it.

Procedure to apply new Fonts

  • Connect the phone in the ‘Mass Storage’ profile to the computer. Alternatively, you can use the memory card reader.
  • Goto the Memory Card, it shows up as a Removable Disk.
  • Navigate to the ‘resource’ folder and open it.
  • Copy the ‘Fonts’ folder into in.
  • Eject the device and restart.
  • You should see the new fonts applied.

Procedure to apply your Fonts

  • Make 4 copies of the font you desire to use and place them in a folder labeled ‘Fonts’.
  • Name them exactly as:

– s60snr.ttf
- s60ssb.ttf
- s60tsb.ttf
- S60ZDIGI.ttf

  • Copy this folder to the ‘resource’ directory on the memory card and restart the device.

Procedure to revert to the Original Fonts

  • Connect the phone in the ‘Mass Storage’ profile to the computer. Alternatively, you can use the memory card reader.
  • Goto the Memory Card, it shows up as a Removable Disk in ‘My Computer’. (Windows)
  • Navigate to the ‘resource’ folder and open it.
  • Delete the folder labeled ‘Fonts’. Alternatively you can choose to rename it to ‘Fonts2′ or anything that you like.
  • Restart the phone, the originals should have been restored.

What if something goes wrong?

In case something goes wrong for example the characters are not displayed and so on, simply turn off the device, remove the microSD card and restart the phone.

You can delete the Fonts folder subsequently.

Since we are using the removable microSD memory card to experiment this process cannot damage your phone. Also, while choosing a font do keep in mind the fact that it will affect the font of the Web Browser also, so please keep something readable.

    It didnt work on my 5233. :(
    Help me plis. Theres no resource folder on my mmc. does it work if i add new folder and named it as resource?

    @Nadia - Nothing to worry, simply create a folder named 'resource', just as you said and you are good to go. Let me know how it went. :D

I saw the trailer of this movie once and really really liked it. What was really interesting was the Thomas Kretschmann acted in a movie with the same name exactly 20 years back. Bangalore - Where I now live!

Life in Bangalore Bangalore or Bengaluru is one of the strangest places I have ever been. First, I'll call it Bangalore. In any case I am not really fond of this place, and the official name just makes me go nuts. Literally! Bangalore techie in action! Lets start with the good things in Bangalore. Electricity costs are also cut down because we don't need air conditioners or even fans. The other good thing about Bangalore is its vicinity to various tourist spots in South India. Getting back to making stuff

I was off for a while. I mean, I was not. I painted an old shoecase that now looks a gorgeous white cupboard. I fixed my bicycle.  But beyond this, I did not do much beyond what my work paid me to do. So here I am, about to touch a new year of my life - and I am itching to get back into the habit of writing again.  Not just writing stuff here, but also making applications or music.  In fact, after a very long time I feel like sketching again. I think I am going to sketch my wife. Or may be finish my ex wife's sketch. I dunno. But I am gonna get started with a pencil tomorrow. Thanks to chatgpt, I have restarted my application brainstorming and dusted my old Github repos.  I think this is going to be a good run this time.
