Trace your IP

Tracing your IP and the hops made is easy. Remember this is different from finding your IP address. You can easily get your IP address by simply running the ‘ping’ command. This tutorial will show you the geographical locations travelled by the data between your system and some remote address.

What is an IP address?

An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is usually a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.

How to trace your IP?

 

Windows
  • Press Win + R', the Run Dialog box opens
  • Type ‘cmd’ and press Enter

  • Type tracert www.google.com (or any other site)
    You will find many entries with their respective IP addresses. These actually denote the path travelled by the packets of data between your machine and     www.google.com (or any other site)

Unix/Linux
  • First let me admit, this method is way cooler, the details provided are also great
  • Fire a Terminal
  • Type: traceroute www.google.com (or any other site) and press Enter. You will see the list of hops made by the packet here as well.

 

What are these addresses?

They are steps data has to travel while going from your computer to the website you wish to. This is how it works.

Showing above is a trace map. It starts from India (1to 5) –> then to Europe, North America , Africa(??)…whatever where the remote website is located or hosted, it doesn’t make much sense to route that so much but anyway this is how it works.

Note that this tracemap is difficult to get automatically and most of the software are paid versions, so you have to manually find that following the simple procedure below.

Ok so now that you have the list of addresses listed in number 1 to a maximum of 30 or 32 hops. All you need to do is to go to this site : http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip-lookup

Now just type in the addresses one by one and you end up with a link map.

Make a list and create your trace map and you are done. Have a nice time and enjoy!

    Thanks for sharing. You can use that IP tool as well to get the IP, https://dnschecker.org/ip-location.php, which even provides you the location of IP from several geolocation databases.

Operation Situation Report Summary - Ukraine 4 March

 Defense Without Strategy Ukraine seems to be hell bent on fighting a static war without almost any flexibility. Their forces may be valiant and defiant, but without a coherent strategy, the best they can hope for is to prolong their own suffering WITHOUT significantly hurting the enemy. Here is how the situation stands as of now. Kherson has fallen. The front in the South was decisively broken day before yesterday with the capture of the railway station and port. Naturally, the Russian forces did not wait and moved straight North to Mykolaiv. All UA forces on the Dnepr facing South are likely to be outflanked. Unless the Russian spearheads are cut off and destroyed in a day or two, it will be too late. The fall of the entire South seems to be inevitable.  To extricate the forces, UA should have withdrawn forces from other sectors (including far away Donetsk front).
